A Mt. Victory Camp TortoiseFREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: How close to the airport are you?
A: We’re a 20 minute drive from the airport. You can rent a car (we’ll arrange it for you if you want) or a cab ride will get you here (about $15.00).

Q: How about food?
A: Your unit’s kitchenette has what you need to do full-scale meal preps. Groceries can be purchased at local grocery stores. The camp commissary sells ice. Prepared meals are available on certain days from the camp. Good restaurants are just down the hill.

You can arrange with us ahead of time to provide campfire food service or even catered meals for your group in the pavilion. We emphasize local island food: No “Ball Park Hot Dogs” in our freezer, but we’ll find you some good local lamb or beef or fish if we can! Just let us know ahead of time.

A mother and her toddler relax in the hammock in the Schoolhouse Bungalow at Mount Victory Camp.Q: What do I need to bring?
A:  Living at the camp is pretty comfortable. So pack the same as for any trip to the Caribbean: light clothes, one light long-sleeved shirt or sweater, bug spray, sunblock, a good sun hat and sunglasses, your camera, a swim suit, a beach towel. We’d only add: a flashlight. Please see our policy on linens above.

Q: What kind of person likes Mt. Victory Camp?
A: We mainly appeal to independent-minded folks. Especially people who like to get close to nature, and like the cultural variety our place offers. We’ve also found that people without a lot of outdoors experience like the camp as a way to learn and experience the joys of trying something new.

Skull and antlers of a local white-tailed deer White-tailed deer live throughout the valley and are frequent visitors to the camp.

Q: Who wouldn’t like the camp…and why?
A: Some people simply aren’t into outdoor living. They feel uncomfortable unless they’re staying inside four strong walls with an air conditioner to muffle outdoor sound. They want sliding glass doors, room service, TV, and a phone in the room. Here you’re staying at a small farm. We’ve got horses (some manure) free-range chickens (early morning crowing) and a boisterous night life of singing tree frogs, and crickets, the bird-like call of the giant wood gecko, bats swooping, the beguiling call of the deep forest barbary dove. For some this is all a bit too much!

Q: What’s the weather like?
A: We’re in a valley up in the hills. It’s cooler here than the rest of the island. Soft tradewinds cool your nights. We provide light blankets, though most folks find that too warm. Daytimes the sub-tropical sun can be intense and so sunscreen or light protective clothing is essential. Humidity is moderate.

a large moth with delicate brown and silver stripesA large tropical Banded Sphinx moth can have a five or six inch wingspan.

Q: What about insects?
A: We have fewer mosquitoes than most places in the states in summertime. Our platform tents have bug screens, but most people leave the tent rolled up and capitalize on the cool breezes.
